2017 World Educational Leaders Summit - Powerful Mind Frames for Maximising Impact - Deb Masters

Powerful Mind Frames for Maximising Impact

In his book "Visible Learning for Teachers: Maximising impact on learning (2012)". John identifies nine mindframes that he considers are fundamental in the way we think about our roles as educators. In 2014 a tenth mindframe was added – ‘We Collaborate’. This mindframes was based on the research of Rachel Eells who researched the area of collective teacher efficacy.
All TEN mindframes underpin the ways that we operate and the actions that follow from the beliefs that we hold.
This keynote will explore all ten mindframes and how they are the key to deep changes in our schools.

The What  ... the research based on student achievement …
The average is a 0.4 effect size  - Enhanced effect size is 1.0

What does not really seem to matter?

  • Not who teachers are or NECESSARILY what they do
  • Not subject matter
  • Not teacher education
  • Class size 0.21  ie a less an average teacher will still be a less than average teacher
  • Not student control over learning
  • Not autonomy to schools
  • Not really money/finances
  • Ability grouping 0.12
  • Multi-grade classes 0.04
  • Not the structure of classrooms - open vs traditional spaces 0.01

It’s not the attributes of the students
It’s not who the teachers are
It’s not many ‘deep’ programmes   INQUIRY is good when based on SURFACE level knowledge first.
It’s not the Technology (yet)  When using Tech to produce or make something it has more impact.
It’s not homework  How to make Homework useful?  Make it brief.  Make it relevant to something during the day.   Mark it.

It is about:

Teachers collective impact
Collective teacher efficacy 1.57 Ongoing formative evaluation being provided to teachers about their teaching 0.90  Micro teaching 0.88
Teachers knowing student prior knowledge
Emphasising success criteria  Cognitive task analysis Teacher clarity Direct instruction  Worked examples and models
Feedback 0.75 Teacher credibility 0.90 Teacher-student relationships 0.72  Classroom management 0.68
Deep on top of surface teaching
metacognitive strategies, vocab programmes, creativity programmes, problem solving teaching,
High levels of challenge
Acceleration 0.68  Outdoor/Adventure programmes 0.52  Goals 0.50

The how … the Mindframes

1  Visible Learner
2  Know the Impact
3  Inspired and Passionate teachers
4  Feedback
5  Aligned systems and procedures

In summary, these are the 10 things we want our teachers to collectively believe

I am an evaluator I constantly evaluate my impact
I am a change agent - I need to find strategies that work
It is about learning not teaching
I see assessment as feedback to me (what can I do differently to change
I engage in dialogue, not monologue (interactive, not teacher talking)
I enjoy challenge
I develop positive relationships .. so that errors can be opportunities to learn
I inform all about the language of learning
I see learning as hard work
I collaborate

CPPA Conference - Leading the Complexities of Change

Richard Gerver Ted Talks  - Finding A Higher Sense of Purpose A generation seeking the silver bullet.   No helping the mental health of our young teachers.  There is no silver bullet. AI.  Teaching young people to think critically to edit, and craft using AI.    Clever prompts and crafting/editing. Eric Schmit - CEO of Google (10 years). The greatest challenge I faced was our success.   When you have nothing to lose, you go at everything.  The more successful we became, the more we have to lose, the more protective we became. VISION Remind your people that they are brilliant and galvanise around our vision. Be courageous.    Stay true to what is right for your context, your community, what you know works and holds true to vision and our values. Clarity What do you stand for?    What makes us difference, hold true to that.   Ask the kids too    Coherence   What we project outwards, is this what...
