BOT Training with Tom Scollard from STA 12 June

Ensure the BOT understands about NZ and the key comps.  It is not just about numbers, the whole child is what matters.

Our job is to "provide an environment to allow our students to flourish."  BOT job is to empower the Principal to act.

Keep the focus on "the focus of the school, not functionality."

Strategic discussion at the forefront of meetings.   (60 mins focusing on what really matters).  Focus on why we are there.  Where are we at with our strategic focus?

Reports to the BOT to be future focused and student focused.  What next?  Not purely summative but recommendations ...

BOT Meetings.  Do we discuss anything or make decisions that make a difference to our children?

Think as PLD as an investment in our people not a cost.

Strategic Goals  as we look now and to the future ...
-What are the needs of the CoL?
-What are the need of Breens kids?

Strategic questionnaires.   Stay away from functional questions.
Instead ... how can we partner with you around learning?  What do you see as the greatest challenges for your children as learners in the next 3-5 years?  What do you see as the greatest needs when you think about the future of this school?

Give the questions to students to survey their parents and report back to us - creates dialogue with parents.

How can we handle the compliance stuff efficiently so it does not bog down our meetings?  Can we do this outside meeting times? Communication/documentation and then signed off rather than discussed.

Procedures are for management
Policies are for BOT

Rather than a portfolio model.  ie Principal asks BOT member to assist with monthly finances.  Then finance committee for budget (designated people for this).    Co-op people for specific projects (don't need to be BOT members for this)

ERO  looking for:
Sustainable growth (ie that it will project into the future also)
Equity
Progress over time (achievement)
Consistency of practices
Māori and Pacific Peoples

Parent communication re ERO is a good idea - self improvement is what we value.  Looking to acknowledge the good and assist us to determine next steps for the school.

BE PROACTIVE.  Know our mandate.  Keep ahead of the game.  Be transparent.  Be positive.

BE OBJECTIVE.  Facts.  Truth.   Evidence based.
Avoid subjective stuff in the BOT meeting.  Keep truth, evidence, prove it.

BE DELIBERATE.  Make a decision with intent.  We know why we are doing this?

Response to the Press.   Ask for questions in writing and respond in writing.   Ensure that you state the they have permission to only print responses and nothing else.

Employment Matters:

Ensure everyone has a letter of agreement.
Ensure everyone has a performance appraisal. (intended to promote and empower successful practice)
Ensure all documentation is there for new staff.  Photo id etc.
Ensure all leave requests are filed.
Ensure JDs are reviewed and up to date.

Personnel audit - STA will come in and do this for free.

Wellbeing survey for staff.   Example on STA website.  Report this back to BOT.

How do our admin staff support the role of the Principal.  What can the PA do to support the Principal?  ie creating documentation, writing letters etc (Principal to sign)
