Trends, Tools and Tactics

http://hnyctt.me/kevinsite

Document what we do along the way - this will help with the metacognition of the staff/students.

New school builds - aim for flexibility.   Must have the kids assisting with the design.   How can we make our space more than adequate - SPECIAL?

Associative Learning - how you feel when you are learning cements that learning.   ie Safe Spaces for Learning.   Are our spaces SAFE spaces for Learning?

Mentoring 1:2 - ie Tuakana Teina model.   How could we create that in our teams - peer to peer ... Mentors or Big Brothers.

Is there room in our school culture for different kids? How do we know?

"Today's kids are growing up in Digital Playgrounds and no one is on recess duty."

The Digital Grannies group on Facebook.

Turn about is not fair play, turn about is just mean.

"Every time an educator or school leader becomes a learner again, the cell doors for swing open and kids walk out into the bright light of their own potentials."

Blogging - sharing writing and giving feedback.  Set up small blog groups (within literacy groups) this term and aim to be blogging across the teams before the end of the term.    NM to drive with Lit Leaders.

tunecore.com
Music and/or audio books - publish.

Get in the Arts in the Maker Space.   Randall/Sue collaborating together on a project?  3 D printers to design and create new ideas.

Self Publishing of Books with accompanying art work.

Teaching Twitter through memos and profile pics on a bulletin board.  Tradigital style!  Desk tweets at the start of the day - 140 characters plus a hashtag.

Thinking global.  Are we Global or Snow Global ie in a bubble?
Main projector set up in two classrooms in different parts of NZ or the world. Kids can connect in an organic way during the school day and communicate with each other about their learning

Making Research come to you - check this out with teachers - how could kids use this in their research this year??
https://www.google.co.nz/alerts

Using Star Wars as a context for design, maths, story.   Creating 3D designs of spacecraft or characters.   Building cardboard 3 D models of their plans.

Research and citing sources.  A take away for a Lit session.
Example fits nicely with Intrepid Journeys could do in a Literacy Lesson.   First person who can cite a reputable source and give me some info about the first submarine to have been sunk in battle.   Could add ideas onto a google doc collaboratively.    (Delete any that are not backed up by evidence/source).   Creates interest about a topic and then a context for further descriptive writing.
Audio book to listen to.   Move to watch.

Don't wait for the next PD.  Create your own learning together - building collective google drawings together but going out to Tweets.
Could do this in our next Curriculum Think Tank sessions Term Two.

Things teachers say to inspire kids (link on Kevin's page)
Slice these up - give them out to kids sporadically to keep that safe space building in your class.

Free audio books being read by volunteers around the world.

3D design - printing and then production

Use of QR Codes to help direct children to sites of interest to help drive their learning.

Power of just video ie the spider video.

Using You Tube to create videos together to show evidence of their learning.   Could we do this to show the process of constructing the new courts?   A group working together to take and use photos and then put together a procedural piece or report ...  CORE ED Digi Awards for Kids.

Teachers wanting to learn more ... maybe Extension for Kids

CREATE CREATE CREATE - if I can make something out what I am learning that is the greatest measure of learning ....    Aiming for Extended Abstract - the creation, the so what, the generalisation

What is the life you want and how are are you ensuring that when online you look like you should be there ...

Name it, claim it, frame it.  ie Mighty Totara Project   (what it is, what it isn't, how it stems from our vision?)   Every child wins - example of a name that people will all want to be a part of.

Mana Enhancement Project - PD led by Steve and James

Mana Enhancement Model A tool for Positive Behaviour Management Uses narrative and stories of Māori creation to understand the student's mana and to feed into the strengths of students.   Maui is a key figure.  Mana is central in the model. See more information below about Mana Enhancement from Steve's slideshow Papatuanuku (earth mother) - what nurtures, calms, sustains us When asking the children about the aspects of papatuanuku, listen without judgement. Ranginui (sky father) - how we respond to life's challenges My reflections - This is a useful model to help students better understand their own emotions and how to self regulate.  How could this be part of our wellbeing model and be utilised within our existing pastoral care model.    One on one mentoring with key students - using the model to support students with their individual behaviour goals. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1o-aC1IideJtMCVXTbokYBtMfCQR3pbbhWhpTOpWzhb0...
