South Island AIMS Conference Notes 2022

SIAIMS Conference Notes

Cherie Taylor-Patel - NZPF

Key mahi going on at NZPF

1  Leadership.    In particular professional development for leadership.

Rāringatira Leadership Framework has been developed in response.

Cherie will send this out for our feedback.

2. Reconnection with Australian and other international principals

3. Curriculum Refresh.  This is an opportunity for school leaders to get into this space and take hold of this before the next election.

4. Inclusive Education.

Excluded and redirected students.   MOE has a duty of care to do a risk assessment and provide support to help enable a successful journey back into school.    Ie family counselling, drug rehab, etc …  “whatever it takes”

Cherie will send out the documentation from the NZPF legal team to support us with conversations in this space.

5.  Policy.  Working with NZSTA, PASL and NZEI and working through the advice that is being given in the complaints space.     Problematic trends are being identified and they are trying to create processes and advice that are much more aligned.    Also simple guidelines for principals - what not to do and how to keep yourself safe.

6.  Submissions.  Ie the International Student Review.

7.  PBCB.   Newest union in NZ.   Based on the SPANZ model.

8.  On top in Wellington.  Cabinet reshuffle.     MOE building in Wellington closed, workforce working from home.

A number of us have already applied to be an essential workforce (teachers as critical workers) so that household contacts who are well and RAT can continue to come to work.

Pauline Cleaver - Strengthening The New Zealand Curriculum

Curriculum refresh concept came first, NZ Histories followed and was promoted to the first area in response to Govt push.

Initially in response to the removal of National Standards

Digital Technologies and NZ Histories have been added.

Balance between national and local curriculum.

No intent to dissipate local curriculum - just can’t be left to chance.

Mana Enhancement Project - PD led by Steve and James

Mana Enhancement Model A tool for Positive Behaviour Management Uses narrative and stories of Māori creation to understand the student's mana and to feed into the strengths of students.   Maui is a key figure.  Mana is central in the model. See more information below about Mana Enhancement from Steve's slideshow Papatuanuku (earth mother) - what nurtures, calms, sustains us When asking the children about the aspects of papatuanuku, listen without judgement. Ranginui (sky father) - how we respond to life's challenges My reflections - This is a useful model to help students better understand their own emotions and how to self regulate.  How could this be part of our wellbeing model and be utilised within our existing pastoral care model.    One on one mentoring with key students - using the model to support students with their individual behaviour goals. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1o-aC1IideJtMCVXTbokYBtMfCQR3pbbhWhpTOpWzhb0...
