REFLECTIONS on 2017 Lucy Hone - Positive Psychology - Paparoa Street School

Lucy Hone
The Science of Wellbeing

Intro to science of wellbeing
-Why?

Prevalence of mental illness and stress is rising among the population. (¼) of all children before reaching adolescents are affected. Self harm and attempted suicide on the rise. Produces ‘fragile thoroughbreds’ - many high achieving children really suffer with mental health when they finally leave the structure of school and real life pressure kick in.

Growing amount of research indicating positive effects.

Positive psychology is the psychology of how we keep people on the positive side of mental health.  We have more resilience to trauma if we have higher levels of well being. Same is said for engagement with education.

  • Weight belts and flippers.  Some people spend their lives fighting to stay afloat, while others are much more able to swim at their pleasure. Weight belts can be added to the flippers at anytime so knowing theories/strategies/tools to help cope can have maximum effect.

What are we doing to support positive emotions in schools? They broaden and build our resources to help us cope with threat.
  • PERMA-V (what free people - not suffering, choose) Use this as a check in.
  • Hauora
  • Model for positive education (ERO Wellbeing Indicators)
  • Geelong Grammar School FLOURISH model

Character strengths are like physical health. The more you have of, it the better your wellbeing. Strengths are changeable. Traits are fixed. Using your strengths is important to enable flourishing. More than just knowing them.

VIA- Great tool for conversation.  Year 7 and 8 kids can take the test to get their results.

What are we doing in our school to ensure positive emotions?
Singing? Music? Whanau time? Student led fun events? Celebrations?

When asking students to do difficult things ask with empathy.

Geelong Grammar visual model - Flourish. Could we create a similar model based on our tree?
