NZCER Presentation – Cathy Wylie

NZCER Presentation – Cathy Wylie Opportunities for learning – Selection of content, coherence, choice of resources, appropriate to need, the way the tchr talks it up and prepares students. Perceptions govern behaviour. Good schools have good teachers.    This is where the shift needs to be.   The data needs to make sense to teachers. Me and My School Survey This is designed for teachers to better understand their learners and build their understanding about student engagement .   Using data to improve teachers. Knowing the perceptions of learners will help teachers better understand what is relevant and meaningful to our learners. Reflections on Ted Talk - Brene Brown - The Power of Vulnerability

Social connection is why we are here - it how we are wired as humans. Shame unravels connection - fear of disconnection.   It is universal.   "I am not good enough"  What underpins this - excruciating vulnerability. Strong sense of love and belonging vs those who struggle for it.   Believing you are worthy is what counts.    Those who had a strong sense of connection: Courage (to be imperfect) Compassion (to be kind to themselves first and then others Connection (as a result of being authentic, who they are)  They also fully embraced vulnerability - saw it as being necessary. We often numb vulnerability.  You cannot selectively numb emotion without numbing other things such as happiness, joy, gratitude.    Then we struggle to find meaning = feel vulnerable. Children - our job is help our children to struggle, tell them they are worthy of being able to succeed.  Avoid trying to make our kids perfect!...

A link to my reflections for 2019

A Place for Reflections 2019 Term One Numbers up unexpectedly.  Challenges in compromised spaces due to build Build all go and going ahead of schedule! Negotiating to get extra buildings bought on from UC Some great work, collaborative leadership projects started with SLT Suzi Gould helping our SLT to also unpack the team inquiries with a focus on key comps/maths.   This work around key comps and the curriculum and the student engagement work will form the basis of my leadership inquiry. COL work exciting - especially Student Engagement Project! 15 March knocked us all.  Lockdown managed well considering it was an extended one. Good to be able to review it as a school/BOT immediately. Restarting on the 18th was one of my most difficult times as a principal. By the end of the term we were all shattered.  It has taken an emotional toll. We were ready for rest. Term Two Buildings from UC on site for start of the term - plenty to do to get ...
