Māori Achievement Collaborative Hui 12 June

Developing School Wide programmes of work to build Mana Māori and Te Reo in your school to raise student achievement.

Daniel from Somerfield School

Start with the vision of NZC.   Connectedness - connected to the language, connected curriculum areas, connected to who you are.

To look forward, we must first look backward.

Where did Somerfield start?

Whole school Te Reo programme.  Based on He Reo Tupu, He Reo Ora. Supportive approach.  Team teaching.  Extension Te Reo.  Kapa Haka in class. Staff PD once a term.

Reflections from Somerfield:

Children are progressing and retaining knowledge.   Kapa Haka is gaining mana. Staff are getting involved with their Te Reo and quality of Reo is improving.

Place Based Learning:

Establishment of school houses - linked to places - formed new logo
Building of relationships with Ngai Tuahuriri
Key sites explored, experts sought
Establishment of local area programme of learning Y1 Opawa River, Y2 Port Hills, Y3 Mt Grey & Ashley River, Y5/6 Kaiapoi Pa.   Trips and integrated learning units, Te Reo integrated throughout these units.  Linked to resources by QR codes
PTA to support cost
Community engagement

My Reflections:

We are on the track right track with our thinking @ Breens.
Collaborative, team based teaching around this is helpful.
Could we develop a two year progression which links to place based learning? How can we evidence that it makes a difference to Māori mana and achievement?
How can we get from isolated stuff to integrated?
How are we making connections between whānau, runanga and community?
What is our strategy to keep growing the confidence and capability of our teachers with their Te Reo and Tikanga?

Hoana Pearson - The Undermining of Mana

Assimilation to Annihilation under the NZ govt.
1980s saw the mobilisation of Māori.     Are we there yet?  How are those key documents being used in our place and our CoL?
We can't be complacent.   Te Reo still very much under threat.
Mana as central.   Whakapapa - look for connections.   What is in our backyard?

Janina Konia - Scoping Report for Hereora Presented

Some sound recommendations made - all in the direction that we intend to head as a CoL.

Mana Enhancement Project - PD led by Steve and James

Mana Enhancement Model A tool for Positive Behaviour Management Uses narrative and stories of Māori creation to understand the student's mana and to feed into the strengths of students.   Maui is a key figure.  Mana is central in the model. See more information below about Mana Enhancement from Steve's slideshow Papatuanuku (earth mother) - what nurtures, calms, sustains us When asking the children about the aspects of papatuanuku, listen without judgement. Ranginui (sky father) - how we respond to life's challenges My reflections - This is a useful model to help students better understand their own emotions and how to self regulate.  How could this be part of our wellbeing model and be utilised within our existing pastoral care model.    One on one mentoring with key students - using the model to support students with their individual behaviour goals. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1o-aC1IideJtMCVXTbokYBtMfCQR3pbbhWhpTOpWzhb0...
