Making a Difference

Working in a school is whole hearted
Your demographics when born start to determine your destiny.
You don’t pick the family you are born into.
Family.   Income.  Neighbourhood.
Self worth/self belief.  Aspirations.  Expectation.
Demographics has nothing to do with ability.  It is just about life chances.

If we get quality of schooling right, it can make a difference of 20 times.    Teachers as magic weavers, influencers people who are able to make a real difference to children

In Summary:

We need to reflect on how we would like the future to be.  Create some cognitive dissonance.   Do something about it.  You are the system.  Not just part of it.

Above - VISIBLE Success, fame, fortune  (our kids are bombarded by this on social media)
You can’t achieve these without the often Below - HIDDEN things of Courage, habits, abstinence, rejection, awareness, conviction, tears  (acronym for C H A R A C T E R)

New Orthodoxy.   Controlled Learning - Structured - Guided Learning - Free Learning

The Oz Principle.  AKA The Wizard of Oz.   (Connors, Smith, Hickman 2004)
See it - LION
Own it - TIN MAN
Solve it - SCARECROW
Do it - Dorothy

Moon River Moments - “Moon River wider than mile, I’m crossing you in style some day”.  Stop the hurry.   Put the song  in your head - slow down …

A secret to managing behaviour - be an actor, not a reactor.

We are teaching the love of learning.   It’s not all about content.

Mana Enhancement Project - PD led by Steve and James

Mana Enhancement Model A tool for Positive Behaviour Management Uses narrative and stories of Māori creation to understand the student's mana and to feed into the strengths of students.   Maui is a key figure.  Mana is central in the model. See more information below about Mana Enhancement from Steve's slideshow Papatuanuku (earth mother) - what nurtures, calms, sustains us When asking the children about the aspects of papatuanuku, listen without judgement. Ranginui (sky father) - how we respond to life's challenges My reflections - This is a useful model to help students better understand their own emotions and how to self regulate.  How could this be part of our wellbeing model and be utilised within our existing pastoral care model.    One on one mentoring with key students - using the model to support students with their individual behaviour goals. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1o-aC1IideJtMCVXTbokYBtMfCQR3pbbhWhpTOpWzhb0...
